On June 2, BJC Executive Director J. Brent Walker took part in a panel discussion at Calvary Baptist Church’s “Different Kind of Baptist Revival” in Washington, D.C. Walker joined Stan Hastey, the retiring executive director of the Alliance of Baptists, and Jeff Haggray, executive director of the District of Columbia Baptist Convention, to talk about the past and future of Baptists. Baptist historian Rosalie Beck – who is also a member of Baylor University’s faculty – facilitated the conversation.
Walker, Hastey, and Haggray’s focus of conversation was “hoping for the future.” They discussed their embrace of the Baptist identity and how they deal with common misconceptions of Baptist heritage. The panelists also talked about how involved churches should be when it comes to political matters and the potential pitfalls every congregation has to navigate. Audience members had a chance to question the panelists, and the issues raised by the crowd ranged from diversity in churches to the future of the denomination itself.
