Via Religion Clause, while much of Europe is moving toward greater restrictions on religious liberty, Turkey is expanding religious liberty rights for women. For the first time in nearly 100 years, women will be allowed to wear headscarves in public universities and workplaces.

Euronews has more:

Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said the new law would bring greater democracy: “The old regulation included restrictions on women and men’s appearances and this was a violation and discrimination against the freedom of religion and consciousness, it was discriminatory,” Erdogan said.

A ban on wearing the head scarf in Universities and workplaces effectively shut Muslim women out of those opportunities and created unnecessary division along sectarian lines. This is a positive step toward repairing that breach.
