Via Howard Friedman at Religion Clause, President Obama has sent back to the Senate the nomination of Susan Johnson Cook to be Religious Freedom Ambassador at Large. Dr. Cook received a confirmation hearing last year, but no vote on the floor.
This position has been the subject of intense debate, with some harshly suggesting that the President's delay in filling the post reflected a lack of concern for religious freedom around the world. At this point, any delay can be attributed to the Senators holding up the nomination.
