A prisoner in a California prison who was punished for refusing to shave his beard has a new ally in his claim that his religious freedom rights were violated. The Justice Department filed suit yesterday. AP reports:
The lawsuit filed Tuesday also names Gov. Jerry Brown and the state corrections department. It follows an investigation by the DOJ claiming that Sukhjinder (sook-JIN'-der) Basra's right to practice his religion was violated.

He claims that guards told him he violated a rule prohibiting inmates from growing facial hair longer than a half inch.
