CNN debate moderator John King asked the candidates their view on contraception. The discussionquickly shifted to religious liberty. Governor Romney brought up not only the Obama Administration’s contraception coverage decisions but the government’s position in the recently decided religious discrimination case, suggesting the 2 positions amount to an attack on religious liberty unprecedented “in the history of the country.”

The Obama Administration is promising to investigate a recent incident in which many copies of the Quran were inadvertently burned by US military personnel in Afghanistan. Protests there have claimed the lives of at least 7, according to NPR.

In a statement released today, the Baptist Joint Committee and 13 other religious organizations representing many faith traditions, urged presidential candidates to be ethical in the use of religion in their campaigns. The Baptist, Methodist, UCC, Jewish, Sikh, Hindu and Islamic religions may have many different perspectives and viewpoints obviously, but many of their adherents are united in this one belief: campaigns should exercise restraint and judgment in using matters of faith.

After a NY federal district judge enjoined the City from enforcing its rule barring the use of school buildings for religious worship, the 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals – which had previously found the law constitutional – responded quickly. In a 2-page order, the Appeals Court clarified that the judge’s restraining order could apply only to the plaintiffs in that particular case, the Bronx Household of Faith, and not to churches across the city not a party to the lawsuit.
