The Sanctuary Movement is a movement of hospitality that propelled faith communities’ practices of loving neighbors. While it has taken different forms throughout the years, the movement’s roots of interfaith solidarity and mutual transformation still provide lessons for those committed to migrant justice today.
Join us in Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minn., from October 21-23, 2025, as Dr. Sergio González delivers BJC’s annual Walter B. and Kay W. Shurden Lectures on Religious Liberty and Separation of Church and State, held in partnership with the University of St. Thomas. We will explore the history, challenges, and future of the Sanctuary Movement in the struggle for migrant justice.
“Criminalizing Mercy: Sanctuary and Government Repression of Migrant Justice” will have three events. You are invited to all three, but advance registration is required. If you cannot attend in person, you can sign up to receive a recording of one lecture. The events are:
- Tuesday, October 21, at 7 p.m. in Minneapolis:A conversation with Dr. Sergio González and community members about how faith communities can engage in sanctuary in this moment.
- Wednesday, October 22, at 7 p.m. at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minn.: Dr. Sergio González presents “Criminalizing Mercy: Sanctuary and Government Repression of Migrant Justice.” This lecture will be recorded.
- Thursday, October 23, at 12:30 p.m. in St. Paul: A lunch conversation co-sponsored by the Murphy Institute about the North Star Act at the University of St. Thomas School of Law.
