In response to a threatened lawsuit by the Military Religious Freedom Foundation, Air Force officials have removed officer training material that focused on spiritual and moral elements of leadership. Military.com has more:
Under a section titled “Spiritual and Ethical Responsibilities of the Leader,” the reading argued that officership carries with it moral responsibility and that the government expects officers’ conduct to “reflect the ideals and values that our nation cherishes.”
“If you attend chapel regularly, both officers and airmen are likely to follow this example,” it states. “If you are morally lax in your personal life, a general moral indifference within the command can be expected. On the other hand, if you give evidence of being a person of integrity who is as strict with yourself as you are with others, who measures yourself by the same standards that you expect of your command, your sense of moral responsibility will pervade the organization.”
According to one anonymous officer, trainees were required to provide chapel attendance as a way to demonstrate moral leadership on tests. MRFF is requesting a complete review of all Squadron Officer School training materials.
