As expected, the Florida State House passed a bill today that allows school districts in the state to allow studnspirational messages” including religious statements in school assemblies. By a 88-27 margin, following a spirited debate on the floor, the vote sends the bill on to the Governor for his signature.
Supporters said it reaffirms the right of Florida students under the First Amendment to proclaim their religious beliefs without fear of being restricted by government. They said the country was in danger of becoming unmoored from the religious traditions that they say guide the nation.
Opponents — all Democrats — warned it would subject students from minority religions to possible discrimination and could ensnare school districts in costly lawsuits.
Both sides also agreed it could also allow messages that include Holocaust denial, racially-charged speeches or endorsements of sex and drugs.
