In a hearing today, Senators advocating a revival of the DC school voucher program threatened to cut off funds for DC schools generally if local officials reject the plan.

At a Senate Homeland Security and Government Affairs hearing on the issue, Lieberman (I-Conn.) and Collins (R-Maine) stressed to Mayor Vincent C. Gray and D.C. Council Chairman Kwame Brown (D) that they and House Republicans are making the restarting of the program a chief priority .

"I think the extra funds that come to D.C. . . . will be in serious jeopardy if the opportunity funding is not in this three-part program" of public and charter schools, Lieberman said.

Collins, the committee's ranking member, strongly echoed Lieberman's warning.

"I believe unless there is a three-sector approach, the money for D.C. Public Schools and D.C. charter schools will be in jeopardy," Collins said.
