Just a quick hit post, but wanted to throw this story out there and see what you think. Cardinal Dolan, who has led the fight against the Obama Administration’s contraception coverage mandate in the Affordable Care Act, will be giving the benediction at the Republican National Convention in Tampa next week. Dolan who heads the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, claims the appearance should not be interpreted as an endorsement of Governor Romney’s campaign.
The party conventions, of course, are not government events. Even if they were, consecrating them with a ceremonial prayer likely would not pose a church-state problem. Still…anyone troubled by this? Should campaigns be aligning themselves with religious leaders? Should religious leaders active in hot-button issue advocacy allow themselves to be used by political campaigns?
